Nitrous Oxide Sedation Dentistry

At Ironwood Dental Care, we understand that not every patient that walks through our door is excited to be visiting our offices. Dental care can often be a stressful procedure regardless of what type of procedure you are visiting a dentist for. A number of our patients can vividly recall a time that they had a poor dental experience, and that affects every visit that they have had from that point forward. In addition, popular media often portrays a dental visit in a negative light, even though most appointments are simple, pleasant, and positive.

If you are a patient that experiences stress or nervousness about visiting a dentist, call to schedule a consultation today. We understand dental anxieties and offer a variety of tools to help make sure that we build your trust and confidence with our offices. One of the most common approaches that we use to help you enjoy your dental appointment is the use of nitrous oxide or laughing gas.

Sedation Dentistry

Many dental practices have realized the importance of using sedation dentistry to help patients experience all the benefits of their dental appointments and eliminate the negative feelings associated with the practice. Ironwood Dental Care stays on the cutting edge of this technology so we can offer our patients the best treatments available.

There are a variety of different sedation practices available for our patients. Each approach has an application that it is best fitted for, but they all aim to help you relax and enjoy your appointment. Dentists typically break down sedation dentistry by the levels or intensity of sedation

At the lightest levels of sedation dentistry, a mild sense of euphoria is produced, but patients are still completely conscious. They can remember specific details of their appointment and respond to requests made by our staff throughout the procedure.

The next level of sedation is often given in advance of your procedure. This approach is often delivered with a pill. While patients are still conscious throughout the procedure, they may fall asleep because they are so relaxed, but can generally be easily awoken. These patients require transportation to and from their appointment.

IV sedation can be used for patients with extreme anxieties or for a specific dental procedure. While this approach does not leave patients unconscious, they generally do not remember their procedure and are not able to respond to direction from staff.

What is Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a frequently used tool for dental offices for a variety of procedures, including the general application for sedation dentistry. Nitrous oxide is delivered in a gas form through a mask that is fitted over the nose. Once the gas is delivered, it works very quickly. Patients often notice that they are very relaxed and may feel some tingling in their fingers and toes. Nitrous oxide can be continually adjusted throughout your procedure, and the changes in dosage are realized within a matter of minutes or even seconds.

Nitrous oxide can often be used in combination with other procedures and is highly beneficial because of the ability to quickly adjust the levels of gas depending on the patient’s need. If you find that you are getting anxious, you can easily let our staff know so that we can adjust the flow and make your experience positive.
